I agree with check-raising the turn, I don't know what popped into my head to stop me from doing this (perhaps I wanted to take a look at the river and hope for an A or non-broadway filling card?) and play from there.

I would bet the pot on the turn. He hasnt shown much strength so far so there is no reason to think that he will bet after you check. He may very well check behind you if he is on a draw or is not overly confident of his hand. Then you have given him a free card that could beat you. Think of all his possible holdings and count how many scare cards there are. I think you have the best hand now but you should bet out now to make him pay.

I hate AQ. It's my biggest loser (behind KQ, which I've stopped playing).
