Default Preventing a DUI

So somebody just left my apartment. They were drunk, and I knew they were drunk. He's the same size as me, and wouldn't give me his keys without a fight. Two 230+ guys wrestling over keys wil generally get you kicked out of an apartment complex. So I did not wrestle him for his keys.

But I tried really hard to keep him here. I baked a pizza (drunk food), offered up my liquor cabinet (100+ bottles), and my, rather comfortable, couch to sleep on.

My mother really messed up her life by D&D'ing, and I vowed to never do it myself. I haven't. But I feel like letting somebody go, knowing full well they're not sober enough to drive, is just as bad.

WTF can I do next time?

say "those are nice pants". Can you take those off so I can get a look at them. Take the keys then.

Or, get him so drunk he cannot walk to the car.

Don't get them drunk at your apartment in the first place. Are you Canadian?

Get more people to try to take his keys.

Tell him the sob story about your mother. Promise to take him to breakfast. Offer him your bed and you sleep on the couch.

OMG I'm watching the most ridiculous High Life commercial right now...

Sorry, ADD. Anyways. Offer him ANYTHING you can think to keep him there. Hell, make a $20 bet that he can't take 5 more shots. Whatever it takes. Seriously. I have been responsible for 4 or 5 DUIs from people leaving my place that I tried to stop. I finally learned that you have to figure out what they want and give it to them if you care.

Truthfully, just ask straight up what it will take to keep him there. Then give it to him. If that doesn't work. Get everyone to kick his ass.

Call him a taxi. Make sure he gets in it. If all else fails and he does get behind the wheel, I think it's your responsibility to call the police and make sure he gets pulled over.

offer to drive him if you are sober. if you're not, convince him you are better able to drive than he is and then hide his keys.

At a certain point in one's life getting home and sleeping in your own bed suddenly becomes a huge priority (unless your getting laid). Im not sure why but Ive gone through it myself. I use to pass out where ever, and now I have to go home.

I remember my friend who had just got his 2nd DUI fake calling a cab in front of us and then drive home.
