Should I be playing these hands?

I am new to 0/8 and had some questions about starting hands preflop.

Should I play a hand with 2 big cards (not KK/AA) and no low draw. Ex. QQ98 or JJ29.

I would think that these type of holds rely heavily on their ability to flop trips, which does happen too often making these hands a fold. Is this correct?

Also what about hands like 5656 rainbow. Is this a poor hand too? What if it was double suited?

Pairs such as QQ and JJ in my mind need nice cards along with them to play consistantly (esp. up front)
playing them with middling cards such as 9s or 8s is asking for trouble.

Remember - the key to winning LO8 is scooping the pot - taking High AND Low. With only two good pocket pairs you have little change of taking Low and only a drawing hand for High. And drawing hands suck if you are only drawing to 1/2 the pot.

If you are in the BB and its unraised, don't check. Fold. Fold and go to the refrigerator. That's higher EV.

While overall I do not think its a great book, the Krieger/Tenner book on O8b gives a nice intro to starting hands and what types of things you need to have to play.

2 Big Cards that are not AA or KK with no low or weak low draw (24,34 or worse). FOLD

Your example of QQ98/JJ29 is garbage unless you flop top set (not trips), boat or quads. Possibly a top str8 but that str8 is vulnerable to a higher straight (though you have blocking Q), boat or split with a low. Remember, any str8 with a 9 in play is either a non-nut str8 (or hand) or a split with a low.

5656 total trash unless you flop 55 or 66. Double suited is meaningless unless you get a str8 flush. Good luck drawing to that.

Remember, O8 is a game of nuts (holding or drawing to them). Most of these hands are long shots to have the nuts and they have little to no other potential.

QQ98 is playable from the blinds, but i wouldn't think anywhere else. JJ92 is absolute garbage. 5566 is also a bad hand, even if double suited, because it can get you into trouble.

do a search for the user buzz and look at his articles on playing high only hands.
