That quote is different than the one I responded to. I haven't read all the posts and I hate to do econ and play poker at the same time, but I will recommend Out of Work by Richard Vedder and Lowell Galloway. I beleive it is out of print, but it is a great read (and these were two of my favorite profs).

In response to DEADS ridiculous statements...

If I was Black and from similiar socio-economic backround I would have went to Stanford Harvard Princeton or Johns Hopkins....for free.

I had a 1500+ on the SATs good not great grades and 5 5's on the aps with 1 4(Micro Econ grrrrr)

There is no limit to what steps a top American University would take to have me go to their college. I would have been flown around in jets all Sr yr and wined and dined like a top football player...

How do I know this?

My friend in HS was a Ghanaian whose transcript was nearly Identical( a lil higher SATs a lil worse on the Sat 2s and APs) where is he at....Swarthmore full ride...I mean books paid EVERYTHING. My parents made about 60% as much as his father did (professor of Econ @ Harvard)

Why should he be entitled to a free education at perhaps the most selective university in America>?? While I was offered moderate aid at University of Chicago and U of Wisconsin?

Remember his dad WAS FROM GHANA not the US and his mom was Lebanese which is white according to the US census bureau.

Having been born and brought up in the soviet union, i was naturally poor at birth and having seen the grinding poverty and social repression that socialism brings i'd describe my politics as reactionary.

i disagree. yet, i believe people should be responsible for their own lives, you think they cant, you think they need luck. thats where the difference lies i guess.

I did not say there is only luck, but luck plays an important part. You cannot be guaranteed to succeed just by work.
Just as in poker, you might play well, but you will still have loosing sessions... think as life as a MonteCarlo simulation with only one run. You give yourself higher EV through work, but it is no guarantee.

exactly. even a person from a wealthy upbringing can fail if luck goes against him. the point is, that through hard work, you give yourself the best chance of success. you don't have the right of happiness, you have the right to pursue happiness.

You might have been born poor with parents who thought poverty was your lot in life. That's bad luck. If you don't build yourself a nestegg for retirement by the time you're 65, that's not bad luck.

Life is like poker. In the short term it's all luck. In the long term it's all skill.
