On a whim, I pulled up travelocity for rates on cars September 29 to October 3. You can get a Thrifty economy for 101 dollars.

Don't return the car in AC and get a new one two days later -- that's just nonsene. If you don't want the car take the bus or train from 30th Street.

Delta flies into the AC airport and its a $29 (fixed) taxi ride to any hotel in AC. It is a tiny airport though and they only have one other airline, can't remember which one though.
