Canada consistently has one of the highest standards of living in the world.

I work in Canadian health care and I can say that although it is not without its problems, it is still some of the best in the world and universal for EVERYONE.

[/ QUOTE ]
Tell us a little bit about how long one has to wait for a doctor's appointment, surgery, etc. Maybe you should also tell us why a guy in Quebec is suing the government-managed healthcare system.

[ QUOTE ]

Poker winnings are also tax-free in Canada.

[/ QUOTE ]
As another poster pointed out, this is only true for recreational gamblers. Professionals (especially ones making over $100k) still have to pay taxes.

[ QUOTE ]

I am surprised that more internet poker pros don't try and move here.

[/ QUOTE ]
Because most of the pros here are from the US, and US-citizen poker pros would derive no tax advantages from moving to Canada.

Country Description
Definition: Public and private funding of health care expenditure, in US $ PPP per capita.

Amount
1. United States $4,631 per capita
2. Switzerland $3,222 per capita
3. Germany $2,748 per capita
4. Iceland $2,608 per capita
5. Canada $2,535 per capita
6. Denmark $2,420 per capita
7. France $2,349 per capita
8. Belgium $2,268 per capita
9. Norway $2,268 per capita
10. Netherlands $2,246 per capita

In response to your anecdotal evidence of our health care system, the guy in Quebec sued because in Canada you weren't allowed to buy your way up a waiting list. That may be changing due to the Supreme Court's decision in that case.

After doing a bit of research, you are right about recreation versus pro, however that law has yet to be enforced in Canada and lucky for me, I have a full time job.

I said 'try to move to Canada' because obviously you can't just go play in another country and not pay taxes however, there are ways to become a Canadian citizen and for people who spend most of the day inside anyways worrying about EV I would have thought more people would be exploring the option of working part-time and playing poker in Canada.

Insurance is a sucker's bet? How old are you?

Anyway, the guy's got a kid. Even if he and his wife are pretty healthy, kids have a lot of medical expenses...

[/ QUOTE ]
Are you saying that insurance is not a worse than even money bet? I assume you're saying it's worth the negative E.V. to avoid potentially huge debt, and I understand your point. Is it necessary to insult me, however? I doubt it's as cut and dry as you're implying.

Canadian health care is fine if you never get sick. If you want higher imaging like an MRI good luck. There is a reason people come over in busloads from Canada to the US with cash in hand to get their MRI's...because they will have to wait months in Canada.

I live in Cleveland and some of the buses of Canadians even make it this far.

If you're so well off, I'm not sure why you need insurance. Insurance is a sucker bet. If something bad comes along, you can probably set up a payment plan with the hospital, or at least draw on your HELOC or something. You can probably negotiate your costs down with the hospital, as well.

[/ QUOTE ]

OMG..if you are well off you had better get insurance b/c all it takes is one hospitalization from Mom, Dad, Baby to wipe out a huge chunk of the savings.

To suggest someone who is married and has children not buy insurance is HORRID advice.

This whole post is littered with solid and horrid advice. I hope the OP can sort through it and make the best decision.

One thing I have not seen mentioned. You could try this for 12 weeks, and have your job guaranteed. As a new dad, you are entitled to take upto 12 weeks unpaid leave under the family and medical leave act in order to take care of your newborn. Your company is required to rehire you at the same position after the leave. They must also continue to provide health insurance.

Talk to your HR person to get more details.
