Sure you are letting AQ off, but you also must have FE against a small pair/mid pair which would be unpleasant to play OOP if you whif the flop, when villain will likely push.

You're probably ahead of his range and are getting an overlay in the pot.

Villain may back down with marginal hands; in spite of his maniacal image, he probably feels like he's dominating the table and might not want to risk it all.

I'd treat it as an information/irritation bet and show it the contempt it deserves.
