Did he get a job (or switch to fulltime live game play, or start a business) from 2001 onward? Its kinda hard to put food on the table with those kinds of earnings especially after deducting the buy-ins off those winnings. I assume that he was no longer a tournament specialist from 2001 to the present.

And I assume you've watched and analyzed every world champion since the inception of the tournament?

How exactly can you make this statement? I can say that from what I know of the last 12 or so chapions, Varkoni seems to be the worst, but I don't know of all the champions before that time, and I suspect you don't either.

Peace

Well, he writes for cardplayer, is a spokesman for Pokerstars, and he plays there too, saw him win 3rd in a 200 PLO tournament in the last week or two. Writes the Championship and New Player Series poker books. He has also done a few commercials for poker products and hosts tournaments at some of the Indian casinos.

He is not making a living from major tournaments, but that doesn't mean he is not a tournament specialist. Most of the tournaments they show him cashing in are about $1500 buyin, so I assume he doesn't generally play in the biggest ones. There are plenty of $500+ buyin daily tournaments in LV and plenty of tournaments online. It's also possible he makes a lot of his income from cash games.

Poker Stars has a regular feature where the winner of their leader board for the week plays Tom McEvoy. McEvoy usually wins, so assume he is not that bad a player.

Moss, Brunson, Ungar, and Chan have won the WSOP more than once. Harrington made the top 4 the last two times. Winning the WSOP once does not mean you are a world class player. McEvoy can probably be grouped with Varkonyi, Moneymaker, and Furlong as weak WSOP champions, but he is more of a proven successful professional than any of those.

Tom is a notable poker book author and a player, geeez this is a dumb question.

Didn't Amarillo Slim win it? Let's put his name on the list since he won it when it was what, under 50 people? What has he done lately (last many years) except be brought up on charges?

It's just a card game, don't make it much more than that, these people are not outstanding citizens or brain surgeons by default.
