Detroit - Greektown getting worse...ranty.

I finally went back after three months away - and a trip to vegas. Greektown sucks...

1) Confusion at the sign in desk.
2) Understaffed floor.
3) One cashier window to service twenty tables(no chip runners).
4) Dealers complaining to players about being tired/staying over.
5) Loud ass music in the nightclub below(bass- thump thump).
6) No comps or food overnight.
7) Two waitresses - twenty tables.
8) Seems like more turnover in the dealers.
9) Big rake.
10) Cold and drafty.

I'm usually at greektown a couple times a week. I agree with all your complaints. My biggest problem is that most of the dealers are either clueless about the rules or the rules change every week. Like whether you can check with chips in your hand or if there is a third-man walking rule.

I haven't tried Windsor (mostly because of the drive across the border). A buddy of mine tried the Motor City poker room and said he left after 3 hrs. of waiting for a table.

You will find variations on the awful state of poker rooms in the midwest, at East Chicago Indiana "Resorts", Gary Indiana "Trump", Auroa Illinois "Hollywood", and these two poker "nooks", because they are crammed in very small, Joliet Illinois "Argosy's Empress", and
Milwaukee "Potawatomi".

Things are bad in the midwest, because the rooms are being operated in a "casino management" textbook style, and all the joints are using the same book. Check it out. Greektown and Motor City are operated just like the other above mentioned joints. They are all cost efficient operations where poker players are given just enough "cheese" to get them through the door.

A few days ago, after a four hour drive, I could not get on the poker room list at Motor City because of a dumb employee, who could not operate that electonic board.
There were more than fifteen names on ALL the lists. Please note the ABSENCE of any persons sitting at the bar, next to the poker room....yet they won't authorize more square footage for the poker room.

Please....don't let me fail to include this RANCID HOLE..."President Casino" in St Louis Missouri.......

im going up to greektown for the first time in a few months this weekend. Hopefully theyve improved a little. I wouldnt suggest Windsor, i havent been there since the poker room opened but their casino is pretty much trash.

For what it’s worth here are my experiences at MotorCity, Greektown, and 1 trip to Windsor.

I’ve played a lot of poker at MotorCity and a pretty fair amount at Greektown, they both have their problems, and both have some advantages.

Greektown:

All of the issues the first poster stated are right on the money, crappy dealers, managers, and service, however if you are like me (primarily a mid-limit player) you have to go to Greektown for $20/40 limit games (sometimes there is a $40/80 game also). However some notes on the $20/40 game if the “regulars” there clock you as a limit specialist they will demand a round by round game, which I hate, but the managers will go along with them. They also spread some big NL games and big PLO games if you’re into that.

MotorCity:

They have better dealers and much better poker room managers and service. They don’t spread a limit game bigger then $10/20, but there is a very soft $5/10 NL game going all the time. The games as a whole are more loose/passive at MotorCity. My biggest complaint with MotorCity is the wait list, it can be incredibly long at times. We’re talking hours on the weekends.

Windsor:

I’ve only been there once, not long after they opened so maybe it’s better now, but what I saw was mass confusion. The dealers we awful, the managers where clueless. But the games where very fishy. If you just want a fun trip to Canada and play a little poker great. If you’re going just for poker, stay away.

Does anyone know the name of the floor and the President, black guy use to box professionally. He also worked at splash in MS. before there poker room went to [censored]. I give him props, its not his fault the casino is cheap, he really can handle the 20 something yearold drunks who think the know every rule etc.

I play at these two casinos regularly. They are not "player friendly". Here are my complaints:

Greektown: large room, no large tournaments. No sit-n-go tournaments. Management designs games in order to maximize net profit/minute. Consequently slower games like 7-stud and O8B are not offered.

Their no limit game: 50-100 (50 min 100 max) with $1-$2 blinds charges $12 hr rake. So more than likely any player will be short stacked and then go broke many times before getting lucky. If you do manage to become a chip leader, you will find yourself wanting to stay for many days at a time to keep this advantage. A silly house game, all-in-all.

$5-$10 and even $10-$20 games dying out. No limit cash games dominating the room.

Dealers are poor in speed and service for the high rake the poker room gets on all of its games. The sign-in for the games is the most ridiculous joke. I mean, how hard can it be to do this job? Take names and put them on lists. These employees choke on it. Sometimes when they are too busy they refuse to answer the phone. You can never see where you are at on the list.

The attitude of the management in general is to rape players and maximize their profits.

Grade: D-

Motor City is almost about the same, although their morning tournament sit and goes are pretty good, the entry fee just about right and the blinds dont go up too fast. The $50-$200 no limit game is a great small no-limit game that beats the hell out of Greektown. The rake is still $12/hr which is tough to beat, but beatable. The rake on the limit games is outrageous: a whopping $6 + $1 bad beat per hand. And what is really outrageous is that the do not lower it or consider lowering it for short handed action (which occurs frequently).

They do have a nice complimentary snack bar and soda fountain machine in the back, but in my opinion this just allows them to minimize cocktail waitress workload. Players can serve themselves. The sandwiches and cookies are a nice plus though, although its not the sort of thing my fatass needs to eat everyday.

Windsor is the new Wyn Vegas compared to those two crapholes in Detroit. I used to think that Windsor really gapped down in terms of staffing, but now that they are better at it, it's not a factor at all. The cardrooms at both Motorcity and Greektown suck dirt, and anyone who has played in more than two joints knows it. Windsor's poker room may not be up to the level is should be, but I found it a thousand times nicer than the pair of unlocked dumpsters over the bridge. And the casino itself, for the record, is way nicer than the Detroit grind joints. At least you don't feel like you're going to smack your head on the ceiling all the time. Greektown: should get an award for worst design combined with ugliest staff.

And I agree with the post on midwest cardrooms. Most of them are crap.

as i said, i havent played in the poker room in windsor. but i refuse to trust your judgement if you prefer the casino floor of windsor to that of detroit. Its not even close, the staff at windsor are better I'll grant you, but the casinos setup as well as 1980's style is awful
