i generally avoid anything with cheese, but that's because my stomach hates it. i can't quite figure what kind of food i specifically avoid...

No, it's not. You're thinking salad dressing. Real mayo is based on eggs, oil, and lemon juice or vinegar.

Yes, there is a difference. When cooking, they don't substitute well.

The difference between, say, Hellman's and good homemade mayonnaise is significant. I'd say there's a good chance that some of you who don't like the store-bought kind might not mind homemade.
