Need advice.
I do farely well playing $15 sit and gos good enough to rack up $1500 in winnings..
I play $10- 20 Tournaments on Pokerstars and i keep coming up into this same pattern. In the first two hours...i usually play good enough to make it into the top 30 chip leaders. When i make it into the money. there is usually one hand i play where i lose 50-70% of all my chips then its all down hill from there. The style of play i play is basic. I play tight the first few rounds...then i start to muscle people around. I always get caught up in one hand than i get cracked on then i end up bleeding to death. I think i am this close to becoming a great tournament player....My style is basicly the teachings of Skalansky on his high limit book. Any Suggestions? AIM me at nasdaqsuperstar ... |

Re: Need advice.
You probably are muscling around too much. Many players believe when they are a large stack it is their duty to bully the table, but there is a definite art to knowing how/when to pick your spots. To me, you're #1 priority as a large stack is to keep your large stack. This doesn't mean you can't be aggressive, but be selectively aggressive. Watch the table so you know who you can steal from and when.
My best guess without any hands is you're bullying too much and sometimes picking a fight with the wrong people (especially if they can take 50-70% of your stack). Remember that chips you lose are almost always worth more than those that you win, and be selective with your aggression and I think you'll find yourself making it much deeper into future tournaments. Best of luck. I would highly recommend posting some of the hands you feel like you misplayed here as well, and you'll get some excellent advice. -Rizen |

Re: Need advice.
My take on your situation is kinda like this..I've been there before also.
When you throw a stack of chips at somebody who is almost broke usually they are only gonna call if they have these 3 situations.. 1. an overpair, highest pair on the board or middle pair with a decent kicker 2. trips 3. an openedend st8 or a four to the flush draw.. They have any of these hands they most of the time go all in on you..You call hopefully you win When you throw your chips around like you are describing, it makes some folks mad.Basically they will sometimes sit on AA or KK to trap your behind. We know how that works. Now if anybody who has a decent amount of chips pulls a hand I described earlier, they might just decide to call...why do they need to bet their top pair with the A kicker when you throwing your chips out for them... I write notes either online or on a notepad as I go along...see what hands they will call with and use it against them. |

Re: Need advice.
Sounds like you need to looseen up in the first few rounds to take chips away from the weaker players. Try and see more flops and play more aggressively. Steal early! Build that stack up so when you do take a hit later, it doesn't cripple you.

Re: Need advice.
Could not have said it any better myself.
If you are second guessing yourself on preflop play you are far from being a "great" tournament player. Not trying to be mean. Post some hands from start to finish here and if you are open minded your play will absolutely improve. Bruce |

It's 1 AM in the g-d morning and your asking a generic question that a book could be written on. Post some hands
or ask a specific question and I believe you'll be much better served rather than going semi-balistic. We're all here to discuss poker, learn, and improve our skills but most of us really don't have the time or desire to participate in poker tutorials Bruce |
