I'm glad you posted this, because it's another chance to remind me how awful my BB play is (regardless of how many players are in the hand). I suspect this comes from not 3-betting enough. My kingdom to whoever can offer me some useful advice here.

I know this is a tiny sample, but I get similarly out of whack numbers when looking at bigger samples (with more players).

did you filter correctly?

I dont think its possible to have more button trials than SB/BB if it is 100% 3 handed play.

It is possible if he leaves before the BB gets to him when the table breaks. If you chose to never post a blind when it gets down to 3-handed, you could conceivably have 3-handed stats where 100% of your hands are on the button.

I was just about to express my admiration for most of you in this thread, who have such better numbers. Then I noticed one other thing: even the winners here appear to be winning only between .02 and .03 when all 3 positions are considered together.

Does this relatively small number mean that it's pretty hard to make a decent profit playing just 3-handed, even for the best of us? Or am I misinterpreting how good that number is?

This is a per hand rate. .03=3BB/100

and i'll often be playing HU when a third joins, thus getting the button on the first 3-handed hand. it's certainly possible.

Yep, and that's even after paying significantly more rake. In a game without rake, I suspect 3 handed play is much more profitable for the expert than 6 handed play.

Smallish sample as well...

IMO you are going to showdown way too much. It can be easy to overvalue high card and weak pairs, but it's often possible using hand reading to determine spots to save bets, which is key in HU pots.

Surf

Also, I have very very stringent game selection standards for <4 handed.
