Why is the min-raise used so often in online play?
How did it get so popular, and what advantage does it have over a standard raise?

Re: Why is the min-raise used so often in online play?
I have noticed this trend unique to this position/stack size:
early position - min raise from a medium / short stack when blinds are up there "usually" means a pp - 66 to 1010 everyone/every position else it could mean anything min raise is my standard play now on steals and premium holdings when the blinds are above 300 |

It's used so often online because so many online players have no clue.

True they have no clue, but it doesn't tell you anything about the strength of their hand, because they have no clue. It is just as likely to be the nuts as a stone cold bluff. I think it is usually a way ahead/way behind situation and it is best to proceed cautiously until you can get a read on the guy.

i've noticed that the post-flop min-raise is much more common in b&m than online. it means that making a small bet with a draw is often good b/c if you do get raised, you'll be well priced in.

Yeah, I don't get it either, though have begun to proceed cautiously against it at first, but if you keep doing it, or get picked off, It loses my respect.
Last night I saw a min-checkraise of a minimum flop bet, get min-reraised, I thought for a moment I was playing limit! |

[/ QUOTE ] In general, when dealing with an unknown. But once you have observed them a little, for most online players, the min raise/bet will usually be a revealing betting pattern. |

[/ QUOTE ] I've noticed this also when I play live. This was exactly how I was thinking of exploiting it, but I'm still undecided. Kind of bloat the pot so that you can make playing for your draw easier. -Gryph |

yeah, also to have a chance to win it immediately. it's just nice to know that some people won't raise you off your draw.
