How to deal with -40BB?
Sorry for whining but anyone who wants to listen tell me how you dealt with stuff like this? I've had bad beats before but not 3-4 consecutive ones... see below.
Playing at $0.5/$1 at Pacific, early on up about 15BB, then went on a 40BB slide, I didn't think it was statistically likely that those beats took place within 10 hands or less CONSECUTIVELY (I'm serious, every hand I played for about 10 hands I lost *bad*) Example, pocket 44s, limp in CO, 6-7 callers Flop is QKK, SB bets, all calls to me, I call, Turn is 4, I bet, get raised, I 3bet, he calls. River is a blank (or so I thought), capped river bet. Villain shows QQ (slowplayed dammit). AKs in BB, raised preflop, 4 callers, Flop AJX, I bet, 2 callers, turn is J, I bet, I get raised, I call, check/called river, Villain shows QJos in UTG (trying to tell myself to calm) KK on CO, EP raised, I reraise, Button cold calls. Flop is AXX, EP bets, I raise, Button Calls. Turn is X, EP checks, I bet, Button and EP calls. Same action on river. EP shows QQ, Button shows A10os. Button says he is justified in calling 3-bet (*especially* since he hit the ace) AJ in MP, raised, several callers, bet out on rag flop, 2 callers, turn is 9, I bet I get raised, I call, I fold the river, raiser had 89os for 2 pair. limp in MP with 55s, hit set, eventually beaten by some jack*ss with 710 suited for flush. I think THIS hand I played was preventable but I was a little perturbed. SB, 26os, 6 callers before me so I thought whatever lets see a flop (I know I know this is very very wrong I know I know). Flop is A34, I bet 4 callers. Turn is a 5 I hit straight, I bet, get raised, I reraise, villain caps. River comes ace, I bet he raises, I 3 bet (should have known), Villian caps. Villian shows A3os for full house. Then one more beat with AJ 2 pair by another 710s flush variety. How do you guys deal with a STRING of bad beats/tough losses? I have been able to deal with a couple of bad beats here and there (couple of boat over boats on Wednesday). Do you guys take a break after a bad beat or keep trying to play right (i.e. generally TAG)? I guess completing 26os in the SB was a CLEAR indication I should have stopped? In live games, after a bad beat usually I force myself to say "nice hand" and move on. Sometimes other players who are solid players give me a smile and a nod (indirectly acknowleding that the guy who made the miracle draw is a chump). That usually calms me down and I refocus. Online its different for me, I say nice hand and most of the time ppl just ignore you. What do you try to do? Sorry for all the complaining I hope you guys will still analyze my hands when I start playing in a day or two |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
44 losing to QQ when the flop is QKK is not a bad beat. Sorry...
We all have swings. Post some hands that are causing you difficulty (sans results) and ask for people to critisize your play. Just talking about results and posting bad beat stories is not going to help you reverse that slide. Best of luck^^ |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
Dude, i didnt read all of your post so i have no idea if you got sucked out on more than usual, but 40bb swing is not much at all. Its like 4/5 hands. I wouldnt worry to much, just carry on playing.

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
I start dealing with -40 BB slides by looking at my last 7000 hands (before last night).
KK = Loser QQ = Loser TT = Loser 99 = Loser AKs = Loser AJs = Loser KQs = Loser KJs = Loser There was a 2000 hand stretch where hands I raised with...which are not THAT many...had actually LOST me money. Just realize, variance happens, it doesn't mean you're a bad player. But what it does mean is that once you're done with the bad swing, things go back to normal. When I was down $1300 at 3/6, it didn't help - but after one good 3 hour session, I'm only down $200. Sometimes the cards have it in for you... Alex |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
Thanks for the encouragement and listening to me whine!
I know the QQ hand wasn't really a bad beat but it was a tough one, I couldn't put him on QQ with no PFR. I normally would post my hands but the damn Pacific Poker's hand history is terrible, I'm only playing at sites with text hand histories from now on. Or do the TGC promo. Any tips on controlling tilt? I think my tilt limit is 3 bad beats/tough losses, once I get pass that its difficult for me to remain calm.... dammit! |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
Individual hand results have zero meaning, even when strung together 5-10 in a row. All that matters is whether you played the hand right - if you did, you shouldn't care if you won or lost. Playing right means that when you've played enough hands so that the odds even out, you'll be ahead in the money column. By the nature of the thing, the odds will go against you a certain amount of the time and you'll lose some hands anyway.
Let me ask you this, if you get lucky draws 3 hands in a row, do you throw your strategy out the window and just play anything you're dealt? That would be the equivalent to getting discouraged after 3 hands when the draw or other luck factors go against you. Forget the results. Focus on the play. |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
That might still just be bad luck or maybe you stick to hard to your pocket pairs when there are overcards...
For me AKs is a big time looser, but I don't care since A7o is has proven to be a sure winner... |

Re: How to deal with -40BB?
40 is nothing. you can lose 40 BB's in 10 minutes when the deck hits you the right way.
+200BB swings will be coming, so learn to deal with them. |
