Right off the bat, if it's a state like TX or NY, let it go - the penalities aren't worth it -

What I would do is start going to more bars, esp. retail bars like TGIFridays or Applebee's and after a few weeks of getting to know the bartenders, mention you'd like to stop drinking and pick up weed instead...

for some reason, there's a lot of weed in the retail industry, esp. the restaraunt industry.

what's so notable about the penalty for smoking weed in NY?

I was talking to folks in NYC - they said it was pretty high there...also Vegas from what I understand - I'd have to check NORML's website for specifics.
