Something like this would never happen, especially in a card room. I just don't believe it.

can't respond to the other questions and this is going to be quite smart-assish but if I don't say it someone else will.....

your money is very possibly gone for good.
I have NEVER loaned money to someone in a card-room.

He 'ran it up' to $800?? You didn't cut him off at some point before this?

I would think that most responses to your questions won't be any more helpful than just "you have to really be firm with him. and if you see him playing at the table then you have to get some of that money back no matter what."
Otherwise...the guy is playing you....is probably a losing player....and you are likely out $800.
Lesson learned.

(even if you do get paid back this should be a lesson regarding the risks and inconvenience involved with loaning money)

this isn't a friend... a friend would acknowledge that they haven't forgot about your money.

I never lend money friends or family non-payment will affect the relationship.

If you think your 'friend' is stiffing you, then he's no friend.

I have never been in this type of situation. Never lend money to anyone, friend, foe, spouse, or stranger, for any reason, with in 10 miles of a casino or cardroom and expect to see your money again.

If he is "always" broke, then you can't get your money back. First, he has to have the money to pay before you can get it. If you do see him with enough money to repay you, break his legs and take it. Problem solved.

I have a policy here. I don't lend, and I don't borrow, except with my VERY good friends whom I know WELL and normally hang out with in places other than cardrooms. I don't care how many times we've played together, if you aren't my friend OUTSIDE the cardroom, I will NEVER lend you money, PERIOD. Lots of problems like yours solved with this policy. For that matter, I haven't ever had the problem you have (thanks to my policy), but I sure have seen lots of others who have. Too many people suddenly disappear right after they borrow money, and many never come back.

I'd say for your situation, kick him in the nuts as a warning, then if he doesn't fess up fast, go for the fingers with the bolt cutters while he's tied up in the bathroom. Give him ten chances to answer the question... "where's my money?"

When you lend money to a bunch of people in a cardroom, you should expect that you will not get 100% of it back. This is the one guy who's stiffed you. Hopefully the next 20 guys you lend money to will be more trustworthy.

(That last line was a joke. I don't lend money in cardrooms (nonetheless, I've still managed to get screwed) and you probably won't either, now that you've learnt your lesson.)

This may seem like a "funny" response, but I'm serious. How big are you? If you're not intimidating in size, find somebody who is. Don't procrastinate on this. Anybody will tell you, the longer you wait, the worse off your chances of getting your money back. And seriously, don't be afraid to bust his ass up. $800 bones is legit. If you live near San Diego, I'll come along. It's fun
