Re: not in total vain
I'm disappointed in the end of "newbie chronicels". I have just recently started to study poker seriously over the past month or so. I was refered to 2+2 by "poker for dummies" (that's just how clueless i was) and was able to relate with the newbie chronicles. I have learned a good deal by the advice posted by you the more experienced players.
In the short time since I have started playing poker.I have played two short casino sessions 2-5 games, and found two local games 2-5 home game, 10-20 backroom ( though I have played in niether). Stoped reading the wrong books and begun reading the right books, all other literature pushed to the side. Started studing human behavior in my everyday life.I continuously think about poker. On my drive home i can't wait to play Pokerparidise. I've just begun reading about the legends. My intrests sparked by a picture i saw of a young cocky and confident Stu Unger sitting across from Doyle Brunson. Stu Ungers tragic story left me feeling hollow. This is only the tip of the iceberg. The more I learn the more I understand I don't know anything. I do grasp you can't concieve quantium physics until you learn 2+2=4. Thanks to everyone who has taken time to help us Newbies. |

Re: 26 The Newbie Chronicles: The Fat Lady Sings
Marbles wrote "Add it all up, and I agree that your time will never be best utilized by playing poker. Even if you could turn a profit, the opportunity cost of misallocating your talents would be huge.
Here is a story about my trip to Boston this past weekend: I flew into Logan International and landed just in time to be caught in rush hour traffic. After entering the cab we were crawling through Beantown on our way to Sudbury. The driver asked where I was from then began to tell me all about my hometown. He knew the population, area in square miles, average tempertures per season, the names of all the college teams, and even how many fast food restaurants per capita throughout the entire state. He then began to tell me about our Philharmonic orchestra and how well they played, the dangers of the Arkansas river running through town, how friendly the people are and what meals the best local restaurants served. I was mesmerized by the plethora of his knowledge about my home sweet home. Then I queeried him as to when he had last visited my fair city. He laughed and said "I've never been there, I already know all I need to from books and the internet, so why would I ever need to visit?" We had plenty of time for conversation so after covering many topics poker came up. The driver told me he had studied poker books, practiced against a computer, played in frerolls and play money tournaments and even sat down in a live game once but lost due to the poor play of his opponnents. He had given up on playing poker professionally and sought out a position where his talents could be better utilized. It appears you were correct marbles, our Newbie has found the perfect position in which to utilize his wealth of knowledge and vast talent! . |

Be careful dude. Yes you need to focus to get good but don't let your life get out of balance. I'd recommend reading the thread ' homeostatic question about playing winning poker ' on the psychology board for some excellent insights. Best of luck, or as the PokerBabe would say: LGPG |

Sorry, I was a little cranky
Plus, your quote WAS easily misinterpreted. I like to have people help out the beginners as much as possible (i could have used some help when I started out), so your comment struck a nerve...

The only one who turned a profit?
At least I profited from this. I got a free steak lunch when mdlm was in Vegas.
Clarkmeister and I actually had him sitting at one of the Monte Carlo's tables playing with us. Alas, it was with play chips during a free lesson. He did check-raise me on the turn with the nuts. That may be mdlm's greatest poker moment. |

Re: 26 The Newbie Chronicles: The Fat Lady Sings
MDLM,
I have a question for you. Did you go through this god forsaken process when you were learning to play chess? Or, did you actually play chess and then go from there? Just curious... bdy |

Re: 26 The Newbie Chronicles: The Fat Lady Sings
He played chess first, developed his study program, and then played chess much better.
When he was in Vegas, he told me he's not playing tournament chess anymore. |
