Re: Vote For Your Favorite All-Time Poker Author
David Sklansky the greatest poker writer. There is no comparison.
I also like McManus, Mason, Miller and Dr. Al |

Re: Vote For Your Favorite All-Time Poker Author
Hi Andy,
"McManus and it isn't close." Some like chocolate, some like vanilla. Personally, I'll take a paragraph by Ray Zee over an entire book by McManus. And it's not even close. Best of Luck Howard |

Re: Vote For Your Favorite All-Time Poker Author
ok so you have Phil Hellmuth here but no Ray Zee?
Zee's posts here are fantastic, both his off topic posts and his occasional poker posts. His magazine articles are excellent as well. He's the only old (school?) 2+2 author who doesn't write in a super dry way. He's easily my favorite AINEC. |

Re: Vote For Your Favorite All-Time Poker Author
Other, King Yao is my favorite to date. (That is not to say I got the most from his book, since it came so late in my learning I certainly did not, but I like his approach the most. Must be because he's a quant...)

Best of Luck Howard [/ QUOTE ] OK, I only read Positively Fifth Street, not the other stuff McManus has been writing. But as someone who has taught writing for a living, I thought McManus's book left a lot to be desired. What is it? a true crime story? a pop sociology treatise on female poker players? an autobiography and family memoir? a personal essay on WSOP participation? a mish-mash of all of those things? McManus is also, I think, way more dependent on Alvarez than he lets on (although of course he does cite Alvarez--we're not talking plagiarism). If you like McManus, try Alvarez's oldie but goodie. McManus, btw, also taught writing, and he should have known better than to have put together such a hodge-podge, IMO. |
