your ruling?

At the river other player bets, I call, he mucks. As dealer begins to push me the pot I muck my cards face down. Other player says "I get to see those". I look at the dealer who looks as dumbfounded as I am. He says "If you call the river you have to show" which I know is wrong but don't say anything. I can tell right away I will either need to show or call the floor to get a ruling, which I think would go in my favor. The other player was a hefty contributor so I make the quick decision to show and get it over with. Noone else at the table asked to see my hand, just him.

Would the floor have ruled in my favor? Would you have just shown as I did or asked for a ruling? Perhaps just fling your cards into the muck face down?

Even though you called (as opposed to betting) you have a "called" hand on the river and he is entitled to take a look. In most places anyone at the table can take a look.

Not sure about the official ruling, but I would have shown the contributor in a second. It's definitely +EV to keep the fishies happy.

As much as I hate crap like this I never argue when someone pulls this ****. Even if you're in the right, its a hassle, takes time and leads to bad feelings.

You do have to show if it is requested. Even though the other player mucked as soon as you called the hand technically it went to showdown.

Because it went to showdown any player (in 95% of casinos) can request to see any/all hands to make sure no collusion is going on.

It is easily he most abused rule in poker becasue 99% of the times it is used it is from players wanting to know how someone plays not from players suspecting collusion.

Not to threadjack, but at low limits (up to 4/8), and when playing limit, it has been my experience that it is just best to show your hand at a showdown:

* Most if not all players don't really try and pick up your betting patterns.
* A lot of players miscall their hands, and from many seats, it is hard to see what they have, so tabling your hand protects your interest.
* In some casinos (Bally's AC springs to mind), the dealers say "Show me the winner," without regard to the betting and seat order, and there's this weird game to _not_ show. It keeps the game moving.
* It generally makes others happy, and a happy fish is a rebuying fish.

I've said this before: against very agg opponents who are not good I will call the river heads up and show my hand first quickly.

If I have him beat it saves him showing down a marginal hand or busted draw and seems +EV.
I couldn't care less what he has and I want him to keep playing the same.
Plus often times the other players ask to see and it starts a little trouble. Fun.

This has been the rule in every cardroom I have every played in.

I'm faced with this quite often when I floor. I will allow the cards to be shown once. I explain the the person asking that that rule is in place to prevent collusion and not to gain information on anyones hand. In the future if he or anyone else suspects collusion to call me over and I'll look at the hand. I believe it's +EV to just show the hand and get it over with but if it becomes a habit it does nothing but slow the game down.
