Adding another monitor

I used to have a Inspiron 5150 and hooked up an old monitor to it and my backlight went out after a few months. Was this due to lack of hardware or just bad luck? I just received a new Inspiron 6000 and was wondering whether or not it would be safe to add another monitor? Thanks.
