Default Not betting the nuts...Is this common anywhere else?

Here in FL, we have this ridiculous state law limiting bets to $2 so I rarely play at the casinos here. However, with no power due to Wilma, i made the trip out to the casino this weekend.

The play is atrocious. But the weird thing to me was that on the river, players with the nuts often throw in the bet and show their hand before they're called. They seem to think it's sporting of them to just show rather than try to win the extra bet. I saw it at two different tables over the weekend here.

At one point I flopped the nut flush and someone was betting into me. I asked him, "did you flop it?" meaning a flush. He says, "yes." So I raised him, and we capped every street. When i showed my nut flush to beat his Q high, he got really pissed off, and someone else at the table agreed with him that I shouldn't have kept betting.

I've never seen anything this stupid. Why the hell are these people playing poker? Is this kind of crap common anywhere else?
