I have read almost every book on holdem; absorbed Mike Previt's book on odds; played a thousand games on line and play 12 hrs per day at a live casino games in AC on Friday and Sat and watched a lot of decent poker on TV (not that celebrity poker crap). It is my humble opinion that Holdem Poker (at least pre-flop, no limit) is well over 75% pure LUCK.

did you learn the hand rankings yet? or haven't you gotten that far?

Considering that 4 to 1 is about the biggest regularly ocurring edge you can get it could appear that way to someone with little understanding about probability. But someone with a decent understanding of probability would see that single street NL would be pretty easy to beat if you were playing donkeys.

Well, Mr Pryor, I suppose I do not yet know "what beats" in Holdem. Is it different from other forms of poker? Does "a royal straight flush in spades" be the best hand? Does 3 pair beats 2 higher pair? It does in Canada.

I love the new breed of Holdem Players; ya know they wear cute sayings on their tee shirts, and they have hats that say "Full Tilt Poker" which they wear turned sideways. They drink Corona at 10:00 in the morning and make many trips to the Mac machine. I love them. They always know who-is-who in the circut and often have cute stories about their favorite player. Has anyone developed Poker Trading cards yet? "I will trade you a Phil Helmuth crying for a Josh giving someone the finger". I love the new breed that crys when his aces get cracked by a big blind who plays 22 and gets a set on the river. Guess it ain't luck. Granted there is luck in all forms of poker, but HE is the luckiest. Why do you think it is so popular? You only have to remember 2 cards, and they never change. How come so many people have to keep looking at their down cards anyway? Do they change?

I am assuming that most of you all play live poker. Or, are most of you the "underwear" set playing multi games in front of your 22 inch flat screen eating a big sandwich drinking a big gulp?

I agree with sfer entirely. In some "donkey" NL games (even with 1 or 2 donkeys) the return can be wonderful. The competiiton in the 1/2 game is weak. The 2/5 game can be fraught with obstacles and huge swings, butthe 1/2 is a kinder gentler cash cow

Hi.

I'm a moderator too. I make over 3 bb/hr at 10/20. I'm not particularly interested in meeting you though.

Yes, we love them too. Because they usually aren't good at poker. So we win money from them, which is (I think) what you're getting at. Now do you see why LHE isn't 75% pure luck?

Why would you assume that? You are on an internet forum after all. I play live and online, but more online.

No, and it's not even close. Thanks for showing even more clearly how little you know about poker.

Ratso, I clicked on your profile and it says that you are a Research Scientist. Do you mind if I ask what discipline and what kind of degree you have?

Wow, what thin skin you guys have. For Johnny Boom Boom: I am happy you can manage 3 big bets per hr. You are certainly a good player. I really did not want to meet anyone who makes over 2 big bets per hour. It was just a figure of speech. For others, I conceed that HE is not 75% luck. I made that number up. For Jeff A: what game is luckier than HE? The odds are quite clear, the tables of % are defined. You only see 2 of your cards and everyone see and has the others. You even know when you have the nuts. So, what game is luckier? Please do not get insulted. I did not mean to dis HE players in general, just some. I appreciate and know some very good pro players. they are teriffic. They know the game, AND can read players and tables (a true skill). For Max Power: it is chemistry (physical/analytical) with experience in stats (SAS and SPSS)
