In live play, people switch seats all the time to get position and such on players.

It is bad etiquette, especially in short games. It is generally frowned upon in high-stakes games. Mahatama has in the past been very focal about this point, and I agree with him in principle, though I personally don't care where people sit/switch/whatever.
