Default Board Reading is a virtue (little content)

I was over at my friend's house for the Packer game and a $20 NLHE side game. A new guy that I've never seen before is there. We're playing six-handed when the following hand comes up:

Friend A, Friend B, and New Guy are involved in the hand.

The board reads J974r on the turn.

Friend A bets around the size of the pot. New guy calls. Friend B pushes, and is called by Friend A and New Guy.

Everyone flips their cards over. I kindly remind them that Friend A and New Guy should be playing for a sidepot. They agree. Everyone sees all of the hands, and the players quickly flip their cards back over.

Friend A has 97. Friend B has 97. New Guy has J6 (suited, of course).

The river comes, a 4. Friend A quickly pushes all-in. I am laughing. I see the expression on his face quickly change as he realizes the board pairing counterfeit his two pair. I fall out of my chair. Friend A reminds New Guy that he is all in. New Guy says, in disgust, "I'm not all in" and folds.

It's funny how the simple ability to PICK THE BEST COMBINATION OF FIVE CARDS AND ARRANGE THEM INTO THE BEST POSSIBLE POKER HAND can allude some people.

It's funny how the proper use of homonyms can elude some people.

That's funny. I think that misread is pretty common along with Mr. four card straight.

Not the right forum but I see your in Madison... any good casino poker rooms in your area? Worth going? I thought there was one just north and one in Milwaukee?? Just curious as I travel there occasionally.

Thanks,
Fins
