Default U.S. Passport

I am going to start playing some qualifiers for tournaments all over the world.

In case I win, I might have to travel outside of the U.S. I have a passport that expired about 7 years ago.

How easy is it to renew an expired passport?

I hear that the process is slow unless you pay a big expediting fee. If I go the slow route (normal fee), how long will this take?

Any other things I should consider?

Renewing a passport costed me $300 to do it in like 2-3 days. It's pretty easy, just Google or Yellow Book a passport place in your city.

Otherwise normally it takes a few weeks for much cheaper, but I wouldn't know the price.

The only other thing you might want to consider is planning how long you'll be staying in other foreign countries. If it's a short period then you don't need a visa, otherwise if it's over 2 weeks you might need a visitors' visa. This may be different for each country so check with your travel agent.

Remember applying for a visitors' visa also takes a few days (also expediting, maybe a week or two by normal standards) to ship your passport to them and get it back.

Post office should be able to answer most of your questions. It does take about a month through regular channels (to be safe allow six weeks). Don't let your passport expire next time. They are now good for 10 years, or were when mine was last renewed in 1995.

i just got mine for my trip to japan...went to the post office and paid $145 and got mine within a week...would have only cost $75 if there wasnt a rush on it...so it really depends on how fast you want it

My passport's about to expire in a month or so. Does renewing it cost the same amount and require the same lengthy process??
