I would say that before TPFAP, the best books on tournament poker were the sections from "Sklansky on Poker" and "Gambling Theory and Other Topics" that covered tournament issues.

If I had to pick one, I'd have to pick Suzuki's "Poker Tournament Strategy", but even though it's not a real answer to your question, I believe the best answer would be, "There were none."
