Not enough of a functional difference to be worth mentioning.
For what it's worth, I don't think you're some terrible dude for saying what you said, but that it was hilariously inappropriate, and I can see why the black guy would think so. I don't think either of you guys handled it well after the initial gaffe.

I don't think saying "brother" should have caused you any grief, but I can't say I'm entirely surprised it did.
