Default Re: UPDATED LIST

I missed a few more I had, some definitely aren't poker songs per se, but it's fun for the players to guess the poker reference in each song chosen, wether it be terminology used or an actual line about cards.

Poison - Nothing But A Good Time
Allison Krauss - Down to the River
Eazy-E - Gimme That Nut (DEFINITELY NOT about poker, but a funny poker reference nonetheless)
The Cardigans - My Favorite Game
CCR - Proud Mary (I like to sing a couple lines of this when the river beats someone)
Guns N Roses - Patience

Default Let\'s tighten the criteria to make this list truly great

Note to everyone: Since the list is getting so long, I truly want to limit it to songs that can be directly tied to gambling in some way. Either mention some form of gambling in lyrics, or be otherwise related like Black Crowes "Remedy" being the Tilt theme.

This means no more songs that are just "great to listen" when playing poker... that could be anything. I think we also should avoid songs that have an unintenional poker term in the title but is actually unrelated, like Who's "Happy Jack" or Iron Maiden's "Aces High." Also, no songs that are only "money related" but not gambling related, there are just too many of them .

With that in mind, do you see any songs that should be removed? I'm trying to screen them as I go but if you spot something that might not make the cut point it out please.

Thanks,

Ten

Additions welcome!

For all new submissions please meet this criteria:

Song must be directly gambling related in some way, i.e.,
[*]Gambling mentioned in lyrics (dice, poker, etc)
[*]Gambling INTENTIONALLY mentioned in title
[*]Be otherwise related to gambling, as in Black Crowes "Remedy" being the Tilt theme

Songs to avoid submitting:

[*]No more songs that are just "great to listen" when playing poker... that could be anything.
[*]No songs with unintentional gambling term in title (example: Iron Maiden's "ACES HIGH" is about airplanes, not poker).
[*]No songs that are only "money related" but not gambling related, there are just too many of those.

Wycliff Jean's duet version of the Gambler with Kenny Rogers is by far superior for poker listening than the original.

I second the WJ version of the KR song.

You got to count your dub-plates (GHETTO, GHETTO, GHETTO) before you
touch the turntables (ALL HOODS!)

Can't let this thread sink too far down. A few additions/updates:

Your unknown may be:
Tennessee Ernie Ford - "The Rovin' Gambler"

Bert Williams - "The Darktown Poker Club". From 1914. Later covered by Phil Harris and, under the more PC title, "The Uptown Poker Club", by Tex Williams and Jerry Reed.

Commander Cody and Willie Nelson have also done covers of "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette". I'm sure there are more.

Tex Ritter - "Rye Whiskey"
"Jack o' diamonds, Jack o' diamonds, I know you of old. You have robbed my poor pockets of silver and gold."

Bobby Bare - "Vegas"

Frantics - "Straight Flush"

Blind Blake - "Poker Woman Blues"

Troy Turner - "Lazy Poker Blues"

T. Bone Walker - "You're My Best Poker Hand"

Davin James - "Rollin' Dice"

Rex Hale - "Darn dem Bones"

Nelson Riddle - "A Game of Poker"

Corb Lund Band - "Apocaplyptic Modified Blues"
"Gather round me all you sinners, all you gamblers and card sharps...
"But roll them bones... You oughta roll 'em like you've never rolled before.
"

If betting on fixed fights counts, you can throw Charlie Robison's "John O'Riley" on there, too.

Slaid Cleves - "Broke Down"
"How can I take this losing hand and somehow win?"
This one may be a stretch, though.

By your criteria, there are several. As near as I can recall, "Deck of Cards", "The Joker", "40 Miles to Vegas", "Cash on the Barrel Head", "Queen of Hearts", "Money for Nothing", "Take Five", "Big in Vegas", "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That". "Give Me My Dime Back", and "Mack the Knife" have nothing to do with gambling, no matter how cool the songs may be.

The five in "Take Five" has to do with the meter. The song has no lyrics.

Great post Hedge. I've taken some off, and added a bunch.

Some of them have to stay, just because they belong. Like Mack the Knife... it just reeks of Vegas in the 50's. Honerary titles need to go to songs like Money for Nothing, and Floyd's Money. etc.

I'm grabbing some from a thread on thepokerforum.com and I will update the list tonight.

There is this great Rockabilly band here in New Jersey that has a song about poker. *cough*my band*cough*

We are The Blue Suede Bombers. The song is called, "Hold'em Flair."

You can either listen to it directly (before downloading) at http://www.myspace.com/bluesuedebombers or you can download it from our website (for free) at http://www.bluesuedebombers.com

Wrote it years ago...and it's still a crowd favorite.
