Default getting proper odds on a flush draw

I hate to sound like a moron but what exactly does this mean? It's a huge leak in my game I need to patch.I just can't seem to give up until the river especially with an ace unless there is a pair on the board.Sometimes even then I still push forward and it's wasting too many chips.
When,in simple numbers,is it right to stick it out? Thanks.
