I'm not sure, but I believe preflop is a marginal raise/call and a borderline fold.

[/ QUOTE ]
That's terrible advice.

True, your bettor friend is likely betting a 9 or 6 here. But if hes willing to fold on the turn when a face card pops up (any queen, King..etc) giving u FE, plus u have 6 overs to improve (if he doesnt have an Ace...but going on loose bad, more likley he has J9, 98, etc).

Pot is 11sbs to u, with no callers in between the bet. I know Im probably behind but if I am, more likley its to a weak hand far more often than a strong one.

I think there is a good case for raising this flop. If your Villian is without an Ace kicker, u have 6 to improve, and maybe 8 cards to bluff w/ if its HU (if he can fold hands).

If they got a pair, they aren't folding.

Exactly- I have zero fold equity on this board.

I think the idea was that sometimes you might be right to raise your weak-draws in larger pots in order to knock out opponents and possibly buy yourself some outs. I dont know if it is such a good idea in 1-2 though, since many of them are excellent cold-callers.

i question why i moved down from 3/6 to 1/2 when i had the money, since 1/2 isn't poker. raising doesn't protect your hand it gives them another reason to call and suck out. now i have to wait for the cashout to process so i can deposit....

"Protecting your hand" means putting the other players in a position in which they must either (1) fold, forfeiting whatever equity they have in the hand (as well as the opportunity to increase that equity via a draw), and (2) call incorrectly (i.e., without proper odds). Even when they call your bet, you've protected your hand by facing them with an unprofitable call (in fact it is more profitable for you in most circumstances when they call incorrectly than when they fold correctly).

You're right. I screwed that up big time.

I thought the raise would be much better in a game where there's fold equity from the blinds (virtually non-existant in 1/2). After running poker stove, I'm seeing that ATo wins about 30% 5 handed against 2 random blinds and two loose limpers.

Hand 1: 10.5502 % 10.35% 00.20% { random }
Hand 2: 15.9118 % 15.61% 00.30% { random }
Hand 3: 21.3457 % 20.72% 00.63% { 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J2s+, T2s+, 92s+, 82s+, 72s+, 62s+, 52s+, 42s+, 32s, A2o+, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o, 98o, 87o, 76o }
Hand 4: 22.8457 % 21.32% 01.53% { 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J2s+, T2s+, 92s+, 82s+, 72s+, 62s+, 52s+, 42s+, 32s, A2o+, K9o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o }
Hand 5: 29.3466 % 28.25% 01.10% { ATo }

Heh, I love those hand ranges. Fairly accurate.

The great thing about the 1/2 game is that when you raise this flop with air, you aren't getting 3-bet nearly as often as you are at even 3/6 or 5/10. You get way more free cards also.
