Default DVD burning software

I just got a new computer and have yet to try burning a DVD. I am sure copying one can't be hard, but what if I want to burn an avi or divx file to disc, what is the best program to use and will it be compatible with other DVD players? Also, what if I have a movie saved as two files? Is there away to burn them as one continuous selection?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've found this site to be nothing less than invaluable for all my video needs - it's the video equivalent of twoplustwo.
