Young Hi-Limit Players?
I was reading the Favorite Pro threa and Phil Ivey came up a lot. Someone mentioned he was 24. On TV they mentioned he see's quarter million swings in his bankroll daily.
` Anyone know how he got to that level? Great plyer who worked up? Born rich? et. ' For example, One guy they called "mini-Gus [Hansen]" was identified as a dot com millionaire, retired at 25. . Just curious if the majority of young prodigies are like that. . Also, anyone draw any inferences from the fact that a total noob took the 2004 WSOP and he claims to only have been playing 6 months? (At my own 6 month mark I think I was down $1000.) ` I get the feeling it means he's an oldster prodigy, or he had an edge because he was an unknown, or luck plays a *much* larger factor than us +EV believers realize. |

Fossilman has been playing for years. He might have just started playing no limit tournies, but that's about it.

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
I saw that too. He was about 50 years old or so, only
started playing six months ago. He won about 350K in a 1500 to 2000 buy-in NL event. Some guys are a quicker study than some no doubt. Ivey is just plain damn good at poker Gordon sold his software company for 90 million so...... but he's a contender. I think for the most part, it's like any other game or hobby, you see all walks of life. I strongly believe though, that Chris Moneymaker is the reason for the poker explosion, combined with the WPT on Travel Channel airing the same year. |

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
No doubt Televised Poker is reviving the poker rooms of casinos, for sure.
The TV announcers have been calling it "The Year of Unknowns" or something similar. Implying a lot new faces are winning. Now Moneymaker is an interesting story, but I'd swear the cards were running all over him. Not to genigrate his abilities, but he did catch a card or two, too. Anyway, anyone her think yhat online play and rigourous review of play with Poker Tracker or the like is superior to live play as the way to learn. I mean aside from not having to leave your living room and put up with the casino environment. |

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
The guy they called mini Gus is Paul Phillips. Made millions online and then retired at 25 or about that.

Re: Young Hi-Limit Players?
Don't forget about Stu Unger. He was playing hi limit poker at a very young age. And he never cashed out a dot-com business Some people just have tremendous skill and build their bankrolls.

Fossiman's been playing big bet poker, including tourneys, for quite a while. This wasn't the first time he's moneyed in the WSOP main event.

Everybody forgets Robert Varkonyi in '02. he set the stage for MM, and he got run over by the deck about 2 orders of magnitude more than MM. |
