Default River play with heavy action

$5-$10 5-handed.

An aggressive UTG limps, folded to SB who raises,
I am holding 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] in the BB, I call.
UTG calls

Flop: 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

SB checks, I bet, UTG raises, SB folds, I re-raise, UTG caps, I call

Turn J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img])

I bet, UTG raises, I re-raise, UTG caps, I call.

River 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img])

What is my next move?

Check-raise the river. Call a 3-bet. Looks like a strangely played AA/KK or 55. I can't believe he wouldn't raise JJ preflop. There is only one way to have 88 or 99 and those most people would raise with. If you lead, AA or KK will probably call and you win 1 bet. 55 will raise losing you 2 bets. If you checkraise, AA/KK with win you two bets. 55 will cost you 3. I think CRing is the right play.

It would help to know how loose he is also.

Check and call. He could have flopped a set or a straight. I don't think middle 2 pair is a hand you want to cap every street with. (Yes, I did notice the flush draw you picked up on the turn.)

Default Conclusion

I check, he bet, I called.

He showed 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Is he a true maniac? Would you cap every street against an unknown player?

Check-call the river against an unknown. Two streets were capped and you have two middle pair: I would be worried. It seems likely that he has a set or straight.

Also, don't post results so soon after your original post, I read the result by mistake. I think you won't run into 77 that often here.
