Default What now?

Hey everyone, this is one of my first posts here as you can see. I've been reading the forums for at least 9 months now, and thanks to everyone that contributes here I've managed to improve my game considerably since I started (with thanks to SSHE and Harrington on Hold Em as well )

Anyway, I started off on Total Poker/Landora Poker with $20 on the micro-limits and worked my way up, slowly but surely. I played mostly full table limit and NL, and have made a nice amount over the past year or so. Unfortunately, I just went on my worst run EVER there and I don't have anything left now. Fortunately, I decided to put some money on Pacific Poker a while ago and I have been doing well on the short-handed tables there, so I still have a fairly healthy bankroll (enough for 10/20 limit).

Anyway, enough of my life story. Basically, I need some guidance on what I should do next, I'm not sure if I want to carry on with short-handed limit because of the variance. I'm thinking of multi-tabling SnG's on Party Poker because I've had good success at tournaments recently, and I believe the variance will be lower? I don't mind grinding out the cash, I would prefer to do that then take massive bankroll hits. Soooooo, what game would be best for this? Cheers

it would be much easier to answer this question if you tell us what exactly your bankroll is.

the variance on SnG's is not lower than cash games i don't believe, but there are others on here who can better attest to that.

Well, I've just had a three hour session on Pacific Poker 10/20 limit and I'm up $1000 Maybe I should stick to short-handed for a bit longer.

SH is higher variance.

6500 is not a full roll for 10/20 limit.

discretion at this point in your poker career is the far better part of valor.

Drop back to 5/10 SH and/or $50 SNG's. Variance is your enemy right now.

So, the 300xBB rule doesn't apply to short-handed?

I'm not sure of the exact rule of thumb for 6-max play, but I'd guess 500xBB at the absolute minimum. Those SH games can have some wicked variance, as evidenced by your +50xBB session. You could just have easily wound up on the losing end of that run...

Well, yes, I've been playing long enough to realize this and I have had some awful sessions of 6-max online. Thanks for the advice on bankroll, though. Guess I'll play it a bit safer now.

500 BB is safer, especially if you're playing in aggro games.
