When I saw Gladiator I thought I liked it much better when it was called Braveheart. Same damn movie, but not half as good. Still decent though. But gets worse with repeated viewing.

I only compared them because they were both huge epic films from "our" time. They are the two movies (IMHO) that stand up, while so many others - troy & the other garbage - stink up the screen.

The reply to my post compared them much closer than I did...I just think that Braveheart was a better film from that genre.

Look, I enjoyed Gladiator and think it is a good film, don't get me wrong. But, when I saw Braveheart for the first time at the theatre it was a more exciting, stirring watch with a plot that seemed to be pretty closely followed in Gladiator. However, the themes of nationalism, patriotism and even socialism in Braveheart don't exist in Gladiator. Mel proved he could exploit an audience as well as Spielberg. But Braveheart is pretty flawed as well. There are some bad sub-plots, bad mugging by Mel, even bad editing. At one point in the first battle scene during the cavalry charge into the long spears of the Scots, we clearly see the spears raised, out of sequence. As well, there are the usual problems, in both movies, of having a large scale battle sequence where a bunch of extras look like they are on vacation and barely tap one another.

But, I agree with you that they both are good epics which we don't really see much of. I would say that that was what was really rewarded at oscar time.

I don't see how anyone could not see how similiar the two movies are. Perhaps you didn't see them at the theatre or saw Gladiator first, before Braveheart. Anyway, you, stfu, I'm trying to make a point.

Well, this incestuous subplot may be historically accurate but I have read where the subplot in Braveheart about Robert the Bruce's rotting father was also pretty accurate, it doesn't make it less ridiculous.

What?!? Identical. Big (single) ancient battle scene, but moved to the beginning of the front; the hero just wants to be with his family which in Gladiator, unlike BH, we don't really see enough of; hero is a loner turned rebel when wife is killed; the hero ends up with the enemy princess, etc.

Ridiculous computer generated Oliver Reed at the end. They could have just cut his later scenes out after he drank himself to death on the set. Instead he looks like some kind of Star Wars cartoon.

What we do in life echoes in eternity. Or, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take away our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

Phoenix was good but the end duel stunk. The supporting gladiator cast was weak. I didn't give a damn about them compared to Hamish (ahem), the Irish guy, and Robert the Bruce.

The Commodus character, other than the ridiculous incest connotation, is hopelessly one dimensional despite Phoenix's acting.

And on and on.

It wants to be Braveheart, apes it well, but ultimately fails.

Actually, I hadn't thought about the dead families/revenge comparison. I'll give you that. I don't think the fact that both used that one fairly well-worn storyline makes one a copy of the other though.
