We're selective about stats that actually matter. Strikeouts, on average, aren't all that much worse than regular outs. I'll be generous and say they're worth .03 runs less than a regular out. That means, if you replace all of Bellhorn's K's with balls in play, 177x.03 = 5.31 runs. Of course, last year, Alfonso Soriano struck out 121 times and Jeff Kent struck out 96 times. This year, Marcus Giles has already struck out 86 times. The best hitting players at every position usually strike out a lot.

if you replaced all his strikeouts with balls in play about 30% of them would be hits.

This assumes a random distribution of BIP and that every hitter has the same BIP rates. This is absolutely not the case.

Robinson Cano has been hitting terribly in August - it looks like the league has figured him out.

The Yankees bench depth is awful, too.

I don't like Bellhorn, as I said. But if he can spell Cano for 5 or 6 games down the stretch, as well as pinch-hit, he'll be a decent acquisition.

I don't understand why the A's would want to sign him. Ellis and Scutaro are both better at 2b.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll heartily disagree with this

Ellis is definitely better than Bellhorn. Scutaro maybe not. I don't watch the red sox that often.

bellhorn pwns scutaro and non-05 versions of ellis. his performance this year looks really out of whack compared to the rest of his career.

Worst case scenario, he will get on base alot more than cano, but show no power, and be a good platoon at 2B for when they face lefties.

Best case scenario, Yankees will have an above average 2b opposed to having a HUGE hole at 2b.

I think it's a very good pickup for the Yankees. No reason a 200 million dollar ballclub should have a 2b with a less than .300 OBP. Well, no reason any ballclub should have any starter with a less than .300 OBP, The fact that the Yankees had 2 semi regular starters(Cano and Womack) with less than .300 OBP is absurd

I don't know how you can say that considering this is only his second full season in the majors.
