Re: Why I asked....
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] i think the reason people are disagreeing is a semantic one. if you think the MVP award is who is more valuable and important to the team, its jones. if you think it is who is the best player who provides the most net runs, its albert. the difference between the braves and the braves minus jones takes them from a division leader to a team getting left in the dust of the wild card race. the cards without pujols are still going to win the division, hes arguably the best player in the game but the cards are so far ahead and so much better than the braves, etc you see my point? [/ QUOTE ] This creates a situation where a player can become a better candidate if his team starts losing, though. [/ QUOTE ] yeah its obviously a flawed method and its not one i really believe in. you get writers saying stupid stuff like "well if the yankees get into the playoffs i think arod wins it, but if they dont ortiz does". my post was trying to explain why so many people disagree, i wasnt advocating one or the other. i think the mvp is pujols, hes the best player. |

But, he does have more HR, more RBI and more strikeouts. [/ QUOTE ] The key stat to evaluate a hitter is RBI. Jones has more RBI and therefore is the better hitter. |

[/ QUOTE ] Ewwww! What is this? Stats?!? Logical thinking?!? How dare you! I think the debate ends here. Clark has shown Pujols would hurt his team more if you took him away, which was the one arguement the AJ fans clung to. Pujols should get it now without a doubt. |

Re: WHAT is an MVP?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] An OBP of .432 is a good example of an Mvp. An OBP of .357 is not. [/ QUOTE ] Good analysis. Would save us a lot of time if they would wise up and just hand the MVP to the guy with the highest OBP each year. While we're at it, lets give the CY to the pitcher with the best K:bb ratio, and the world series to the team with the best team ERA. [/ QUOTE ] When was the last time a hitter ranked in the 30's in OBP won the mvp? When was the last time a hitter who hit in the .220's with runners in scoring position won the mvp? When was the last time a pitcher with a poor k/bb ratio won the Cy Young? Oh and by the way, generally the players with the highest OBP's and highest K/BB ratio are the best players. |

Re: Why I asked....
Voters like home runs and RBI. Certain "magic" numbers usually (but not always) get the job done. Fifty home runs is one of them. Unless you're a big slow guy like Cecil Fielder. Andruw has always been regarded as a better player than he actually was because he looked like a good player should look.
There have been worse MVP "travesties" than Andruw. Fewer doubles? |
