I bet. He thought for a bit and raised. I called and check-called the river. He showed KJ with the J of diamonds.

In that situation I bet-fold most of the time, but for some reason while watching him put out the turn raise, I got the idea that we had the same hand except he had the Qd. As Maxwell Smart would say, "missed it by that much."

Hi Ryno,

The diamond hitting will make it clear to your opponent where he stands, and he has position on you. That's unfortunate. The good news is that you probably have the best hand, and you should act on that by betting. Checking will only give him a free draw should he have a single diamond to go with his pair.

If he raises, play poker.

Good luck.
Eric

see, thats what im talking about. you bet, he "thought for a bit."

if he just immediately smooth raised you, KJ w/ Jd was bascially out of the question b/c its not a strong enough hand to show that much strength. the pace, method etc. of people's actions tell you alot in situatiuons like this.

You know the play when you checkraise someone who is a little careful with money (or in this case, check-3bet) and they kind of pause, slump, and call, and then you lead the turn and they raise? I think this guy was trying to pull that with his top 2 and the 9d froze him up and made him think again.

I agree with Mike though on the fake pause - there is usually more information to be had with quick action than delayed action. {Edit - I reread above where you said that if he raises quickly you would fold. I would have too.}
