Why does the color in each cross piece appear different when I put the wrong side of the mask over the crosspiece?

The color seems to adjust when I use the mask as it was "intended"

I'd want something better than this setup to prove this completely. The first illusion was pretty impressive.

The colors are exactly the same that make it up, like the RGB settings. I don't remember what they are, but the thread from a couple weeks ago had them, I just don't feel like searching. That thread also had pictures of the pieces adjacent to each other and you can tell better that way.
