$15,000 guaranteed - how badly do I suck?
So we're at 21 from a starting field of about 750 or so? Mayber upper 600s, can't remember. Anyway, I think I'm 11th in chips: T34,000 with 1.5K and 3K antes. One more spot and the pay shifts from $118 to $160 or something. 1st place is $3,000. This, or something close to it, is all that I care about. I could give a [censored] about the $40 bump. So I pick up A-6o in late position. I raise to T9000 and get one call from a bigger stack (60K or so) in the BB. The flop is 6-4-4, he makes a smallish bet (5K?) I push?

I think this one should be pretty much over when he bets into you on the flop. The weak lead is generally a pretty strong hand there. Hang on to your 25k chips and move along. Also, is this a tournament with antes? If not, I don't like your open raise all that much.

Yeah, thats what i do, not that i feel too happy about it. Hope you have some FE against a weak tight with 77 or 88

Re: $15,000 guaranteed - how badly do I suck?
I dont think this play is horrible at all. Preflop may be questionable... I assume it was folded to you. I would probably play it simalarly postflop, but fold preflop. Im guessing from the post that you lost the hand to an overpair or a 4.. or he called an hit an overcard, but I think once you put 9k in preflop and get this flop you have to push.

Gavin, do you not like the open raise or the open raise amount?

If there are no antes, I don't like the open raise or the amount. If there are antes, I like them both.

Re: $15,000 guaranteed - how badly do I suck?
So when playing in a non antes tourny, what are you opening from there?
Edit: are you opening with 89s? do you not like the weak ace? |

you really think someone would fold 77 or 88 in that situation described...?

Re: $15,000 guaranteed - how badly do I suck?
At this stage in the tournament one cannot possibly evaluate the correctness of pushing without knowledge of how your opponents have been playing. Knowledge of how big stack has been playing is critical in this situation.
What does a 1/4 pot bet mean from him? How has he responded to "over the top" raises previously? With no reads whatsoever (and shame on you if you don't have any reads at this point), the push is not unreasonable IMO. But you could easily be walking into a higher pair. Can't say what I'd do without knowledge of how he has been playing and without an idea of how he perceives my play. |
