Default Best place to turn for help with a video card - gaming

I have an Nvidia 6800 OC(overclocked by the factory) video card, because I like to play Halflife occasionally. The video drivers I am using are the standard ones that Nvidia recommends, I have stayed away from the betas.

When I play a game very often I will get stutter or temporary freezes. I am surprised since I have 1 gig of ram, an SATA hard drive with tons of space, and an AMD 64 processor... essentially a very fast machine.

Can anyone advise what to do? I tried Rivatunder (disabled fastblind writes and lowered my clock speed to 350 instead of the overclocked 375) but nothing helps.

Problaby best is to find a local computer nerd and let him look at it, it might be due to other programs running in the background or some other bottleneck.
