He played in the WSOP for pokerstars if I am not mistaken.

That'd be a tad hard to do since he's an active player. Baseball's usually not that forgiving to people who gamble. Back in the early 80's, commissioner Bowie Kuhn banned Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle from being involved in baseball for being a greeter at AC casinos.

Not to mention that the fact that it's the middle of baseball season and a two-week poker vacation probably wouldn't go over very well with the team.

There was a David Wells in the tourney and he started the day after he pitched and the WSOP was during the All-Star break.

The Sox always let Pedro go home for a few days around the break.

Not saying it was him, but very possible as it would not have effected his starts. Not like they are going to use him for a pinch runner or anything.

David Wells the poker player is from Chicago. David Wells the baseball player is from Torrance, CA. The poker playing David Wells was also in the WPT championship, finishing 34th. At the same time, the other David wells had two starts around the WPT championship. Also, if it REALLY was that David Wells, I'm sure there'd be a few posts about him actually being at the WPT ME and WSOP ME.

playing during the all-star break: conceiveably (except the break was on Monday through Wednesday)

missing ANY games, even between starts, to go to Vegas: no freaking way!!

Not kidding. Doesn't matter that he's not going to be used as a pinch-runner. he has a bull-pen to threw between starts and other workout stuff....and you are just expected to be there. Period.

Clemens has gotten a special exception now I believe where he gets to skip out on the occasional game and spend more time with his kids.
Unless you're a Clemens you're not going to get away with this.

ANY player who were to leave their team for a day or two for something like this would immediately be shunned.

Obviously the previous post gives further evidence that it is definitely not him playing at the WSOP. But I already knew that this would be impossible for a major league ballplayers to do even before someone pointed out that it really is someone different.

If they held the WSOP in Feb or something (or if he wanted to play in a different tournament like the Bellagio 5-diamond thing in Dec) then I'm not sure what the possibilities would be.
Baseball and casinos/gambling don't exactly mix very well. But I suspect they could get away with it (just I suspect an NFL NBA or NHL player could get away with playing in the WSOP in July if they wanted to since they are in the off-season).

Next topic - if he's wearing the stuff so much I wonder if he just likes the gear...or if he is somehow being compensated to wear the stuff suring interviews.

That's a good question. I have noticed him wearing Pokerstars shirts and a hat on the last 4 or 5 post game interviews he has given after a start. The first time I noticed, it didn't even occur to me right away.

It certainly looks like a conceivable move by Stars' ad department. Whoever is watching David Wells in a post game interview is certainly the demographic they are trying to reach.

And it's alot cheaper than a 30-second spot...

When the Sox signed Wells they talked over a few things, like him not having a do all his spring training stuff, etc. I know this is somewhat different, but there are exceptions made and when he signed his contract it was talked about. He signed for a relatively small amount and stuff had to be ironed out.

Pedro went down to the Dominican during the All-Star break every year for a week!

This is not out of the realm of possibility, though it appears not to be the case.

wasn't aware about pedro.

how is he going anywhere during the all-star break? isn't he pitching IN the all-star game?? or was he injured at the time anyway.

i guess there are more exceptions made then I was aware of...but I think they are still fairly rare.
