Default Who paved the way for massive gov\'t spending...?

I was wondering who you guys think paved the way for massive gov't spending. I'm talking about the entire history of the U.S. I have my opinion but will wait to see what eveyone else says because I dont want this to be a thread just on my opinion.

Surely there was some spending involved in the New Deal, but it was really more about putting people back to work.

Partially. His programs were in response to a third of the country being out of work. Obviously, some of his social programs wouldn't be reasonable today, but others (i.e. Soc. Security, FDIC) still are vital to our economic stability. I'm thinking your point is there's still massive overspending on New Deal-type programs today. Shoot me some examples.

FDR probably spent the most to accomplish the least. Lincoln was the first to really put "big government spending" into action. FDR just took it to the next level. So if you're looking for the innovator, Lincoln is your guy. If you're looking for the "best of breed" then FDR is your man.
