Online Randomizer Deciphered?

I work with an MIT graduate. He mentioned to me that a few students were able to decipher the randomizer algorithm that an online site was using and published a paper on it (few years ago)? The site caught wind and changed their algorith. Has anyone seen or heard of this journal article or is it just hearsay.
