the J doesnt change anything

Say what? think about some hands, if this were a K, i would be more inclined to agree.

are you really going to restrict their hand ranges to J9, 79, J7, QJ etc? i think while the J isn't a great card it's made better by the fact that we hold half the 9s and that there were no raises put in on earlier streets

I like this point a lot, but I still think betting is closer than a lot of people thing.

Zeus,

Saying you're good 33% when they BOTH call is probably pushing it a little. If your bet gets overcalled I'd guess you're good about 20% of the time. And I'm toally pulling that out of thin air.

I think the best you can hope for is a fold from a spade draw and a call from a worse hand. 3 way against unknowns, I'd rather check it here and see what they were playing.

i cant believe you don't at least think it's close. this isn't a 50 or 100 game where you only get called on the river with a good hand. ive been called by anything from a busted nut flush draw to any pair between 2 and 9 in this spot.

I'm not restricting the hands to those listed, they just have to be considered in the ranges. My only contention was that it does matter a whole lot that the river was the Jack instead of some other card. Some river cards make this an easy bet, some make it a marginal decision. A jack should be clearly understood to be in this latter group.

It's also a game where they will check-call a weak top pair on the river and QJ, J9, AJ, 79 won't get frisky before the river.

OK, slight change. Suppose you had again raised preflop and were the aggressor on every street. Except this time you are first to act because you raised out of the big blind. Now do you bet this for value, or do you check-call to snap off a bluff? (I check-call, and I think you do also). Since you're putting your two opponents on either busted draws and/or better hands, dont you agree that value betting this river is thin when you're in position? (Granted, this situation is different, but the range of hands you put the opponents on is illustrative.)
