All I see is music I have never heard of, looks like alot of independent music.

Yeah I use Bit Torrent, but there's always some stuff that I can't find. Soulseek has stuff that BitTorrent doesn't, and vice-versa.

www.listen.com has unlimited streaming for about $8/month and you can download tracks for offline/portable play

in a similar sense as to why online poker may be illegal.

russians run the site, and according to them, taking somebody elses IP and selling it is ok. according to the US gov't, it is not.

It's very easy to download entire albums on Soulseek as well. In fact, Soulseek is way easier than bittorrent for finding entire albums -- it just might take awhile to download if the person has a long queue.

I was doing some research into this. According to this website, the artists apparently do get a cut, but the RIAA does indeed get nothing. It also looks like the legality is fairly clear. You can still debate whether it's ethical or not, though.
