If you are out of chips in mid hand- can cash play?

Just curious. In a live limit holdem game can you go into pocket if you run out of chips or can you only put cash on the table at the beginning of a hand? I know online you can only do it between hands. Is it the same live?

In every asino I have played in (10-12 total) only cash on the table at the beginning of the hand plays. A rebuy may only be done before a hand is dealt.

It should be totally obvious that "table stakes" applies not only online, but in live games too. Of course you CANNOT go into your pocket during a hand. If you could, what would happen? Well, when people were drawing, they'd be "all-in," but when they had a strong hand, they'd go for more cash.

Seems like perhaps you should read the FAQ on this page before your trip to the borgata.

No. Only money on the table plays.

Find out if the cardrooms at which you're playing allow cash to play at all. Some casinos force you to change cash for chips before the hand starts, unless you clearly notify the table/dealer about it.

That rule is mostly for NL and has to do with unambigious sizes of opponents' stacks, but they might do it somewhere for limit too.

At Commerce, I believe there is a rule that only $100 bills play in the top section. The rule is seldom, if ever, enforced, but not only should you find out if cash on the table plays, but also if there is any similar rule about which bills are allowed. In any event, no casino allows you to go into your pocket during a hand.

This is the Vegas rule also, but AC lets all bills play. I hate this. Only hundreds should play on the table...then there is no ambiguity about how much money someone really has in front of them. I hate the jerks who wrap who have a big wad of cash with mostly 5's and 1's at a limit like 20-40. Or those who play 20-40 by throwing $20 bills out for their bets. Annoying (though many of these players go off for alot, so that's ok I guess).

If you pull out cash at the beginning of a hand and request chips from the dealer, you are said to be "playing behind". You simply state which bets/raises you want to make or call and when your chips arrive, the dealer will sort it out for you.

Ive read the faq. I just skimmed it again and it doesnt say anything about this.

Your response did bring up an interesting side question about NL though.

Ive seen people bring much more than the max buy-in to the table. They park all these chips on the table and play as if there is no max. Are they considered to be bringing more chips in on every hand to replenish their stack?

Are they actually allowd to do this? I saw a guy bring a rack of $10 chips to the table and blow through almost 3 rows in more then one hand. This is like $600 on a $300 max table. Is the dealer supposed to enforce the maximum buy-in policy?

this is the case in ontario, but in vegas your cash goes into the pot
