Mind-boggling. Contra gave us the most famous (by a lot) secret code in the history of video games. There has to be some reason that everyone on the planet knows the code.

Because everyone on the planet had a nintendo power subscription? <font color="white"> except me </font>

But seriously, Super Mario Kart was an awesome game just for the raw fun of battle mode. It's doing well for the same reason as Tecmo Super Bowl.

Yeah, but there were a lot of codes in that magazine. The reason everyone knows the Contra one has to be that a hell of a lot of people played it and used it, compared to whatever other codes were doled out.

I hear you about Mario Kart/Tecmo, but then SFII should be beating Zelda 3. Tecmo and SFII were probably the best ever "play against your friend" games, IMO.

hey durron, if we ever do a poll like this before, would it be far too segregating to split single and multiplayer games?

it seems like that is where the fanboy discrepancy comes from.

FF6 losing (and by such a large margin) indicates to me that people simply haven't played it. There is no way that people who have played both games to end could even possibly have 20% that say SMB3. I think SMB3 is a top 10 game all time, but the ONLY thing it edges FF6 in is revolutionary stuff.

FF6 had better plot, music, theme, etc. SMB3 was "revolutionary"....then again so was FF6.

I bet most people never played FF6 to end due to length....Therefore...

Travesty.

Very true. But I still think you guys are not giving TSB enough credit for its qualities beyond the raw fun factor. It was pretty revolutionary by introducing full season gameplay, NFL and NFLPA licenses, injuries, etc... Regardless of how you feel about sports games in general, this was the one that brought a lot of the ideas still used today to the forefront. At least to my knowledge. It might be a bit tedious to accomplish, but this is a very good point.

I voted for Street Fighter II. ALTTP is still a gem, one of the most finely crafted games ever. SFII was a revolution. It changed arcades forever, it birthed a genre and set the bar incredibly high. SFII had a much more important impact, even if ALTTP was the better game.

What the [censored] is the matter with you people?!

THE POLL IS FOR BEST VIDEO GAME, not most innovative or groundbreaking or influential!

Yet each thread is filled with "Blah blah, such and such game didn't innovate as much as this other game." Doesn't MATTER.

The best video games will usually be very influential, groundbreaking ones -- that does not mean they're ALL influential, or the MOST influential/groundbreaking.

No offense Phoenix -- wasn't addressing just you, your quote just illustrated my point the best.

I did, thats why I said that accuracy would have been enhanced by splitting into multi and single players.

however, I think durron did a good job, and anyone who doesnt think so should look at the popularity of the threads.

also, I dont feel like SUCH a geek anymore.
