Default better than a fruitcake?

our banker stopped by today to do his job, namely kiss our butts at xmas time. He gave me and my partner each a bottle of wine. A Francis Coppola Rosso Shiraz 2003. Hmmmmm..... looks like caca to me. Google time.

Here's what I found linky

2003 Coppola Rosso Shiraz, California

Ladies and Gentlemen, in case you don’t know what plonk tastes like, run down to TJ’s and grab a bottle of this Shiraz. This is what plonk tastes like.

Dunno what’s up with Coppola, why there’s a big TJ’s display of two of their newest releases, this Shiriz and the adorable little red cans of “Sofia”sparkling wine. Maybe they can’t sell the stuff elsewhere, or maybe they’ve ventured a gambit based on a shrewd guess that TJ’s is just the place to launch two new products. Whatever, I decided to try both, even though I’ve been pretty disappointed in most Coppola wines from the low end over the past few years. I guess I got caught up in the excitement of their big move into Sonoma County.

We’ll pop a straw in the “Sofia” later this week. Now to the Shiraz.

I can see why they called it that, as it is from the big, overripe style, but taken much too far. Once it hits the glass, the wine seems a little promising. It’s got a red-black color, and the nose offers a bit of varietal character, white pepper to be exact, along with oak an very ripe fruit. On first sip the fruit hits you, and it’s not bad for a moment, but then it turns into jam, waaay overripe and cloying, and that turns into that nauseating combination of cooked fruit and canned tomatoes that you too often get from Central Valley fruit. Not good. Into the sauce pot with this one.
Price: $5.99

Fruitcake rocks. I don't understand why it gets such a bad rap.

Wow. You almost gotta give him props for having the balls to give you something so blatently awful. Would it really have been that hard for him to get you even a $15 wine?

You haven't had fruitcake until you've had this one.
