LAS VEGAS - The 2004 World Series of Poker champion, Greg Raymer, knows when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em.

It's the walking away part that he has trouble with, as two would-be robbers learned when they tried to hold up the beefy, soft-spoken patent lawyer from Stonington, Conn.

Raymer, 40, fought the attackers Dec. 20 at the Bellagio hotel-casino when they accosted him outside his room after a game of poker, Las Vegas police said.

One thug pulled out a gun and said, "We just want the money," but Raymer, known as the "Fossilman," knocked one down and yelled for security. The men fled and one was arrested. A security officer said the suspect was a poker player.

They just wanted the money. The part about kidnapping was a lie.

Raymer admitted he didn't have much cash. They had a gun. So he chose to fight a guy with a gun over a small amount of money...-EV

I was thinking how the fact that he won the tournament made his ridiculous glasses 'ok'. If he had lost he would have looked like the biggest dork with them.

He basically dorkified himself by making a -EV play when they told him they just wanted the money. And I'll say again, it wasn't that big of a deal. He is just trying to extend his 15 minutes of fame in to 17.

I'll say he's out of the main event next year sometime during the third round...

Have you ever been to a poker room? He would not stand out as the biggest dork. Plenty of non-conventional dress is exhibited. A friend of mine always says "poker players are a different breed."

I spent 6 years in Minneapolis going to the U. of Minnesota. Sad to see you reside there, as I had always thought of it as a place where nice people lived. And you're clearly an exception to that thought.

You are correct. I haven't made it to the third round because I have yet to enter the wsop. I do hope to play at the same table as you in the future. I'll let you know it's me. Should be interesting.

Greg, in the split second that you had to make the decision, I am curious as to why you chose to fight instead of just handing over the money.

Obviously you didn't do any EV calculation, but you have to think that if they can walk off with $1000 that they are less likely to kill you. I am surprised you thought that it was so likely they would kill you because you had seen their faces that you would risk a confrontation like that.

I am very glad it turned out all right. If it happens again, may I suggest just tossing your wallet at them and running the other way?

for everybody who wants to debate my decision, is to read this post by Wayfare. He points out why he disagrees with the decision, and does so in a reasonable and polite manner. I suspect his chances of getting laid are about 20x greater than these other posters who are so consistently rude and disparaging in their comments.

These guys never asked me to hand over my money. They quite clearly had a plan to get me into my room and tie me up. Now, once they did that, they may have just taken my money and left me there to be found a day or 3 later. Or, they might have decided that since I'd seen their faces, I should be killed to keep me quiet. I decided the chances that they would make this cold decision to kill me were greater than the chances that I would die in the act of fighting them off. Again, I may have been mistaken in that judgment, but I do believe it was a reasonable decision.

I hope that you, Wayfare, and the other nice people on this forum, do not ever have to face such a split-second decision yourself. To the not-so-nice people, well, I do not wish them to be hurt, but I'd enjoy seeing them deal with a situation like this, and finding out how many would piss themselves.
